Pawpaws

There's a plateau midway up the stairs at the High Street Parcel that's just far enough above the train station and car traffic so that you feel you are suddenly in a rural area. You can see where deer make their beds in the tall grass. It's a beautiful spot for a picnic or ... a pawpaw orchard! We planted two of those great native trees and two dogwood, taking care to wrap the slender trunks with protective fencing.

More about pawpaw: With leaves and branches that deer avoid, and fruit that is loved by all, the pawpaw (Asimina triloba) is a fascinating native tree. It’s the only local member of a large, mainly-tropical plant family (Annonaceae), and produces the largest edible fruit native to North America. - National Park Service

Chris Ross, a friend from Rivertowns Permaculture, and Chet Kerr--a main energy behind the Irvington Pollinator Pathway Project, joined the fun. Dipti and Ashwin brought a $100 donation from a visiting relative who saw what we were doing and wanted to support the project. Thank you!

And, thank you DF Police for protecting our small plants with a No Parking sign!
