Pollinator Pathway

Sue, Dave, and Lenore attended the Sept 22 Intervillage meeting of conservation advisory boards--representatives from Irvington, Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings, Tarrytown, and others. The topic for the first half of the meeting was Pollinator Pathways, led by our friend Chet Kerr who has helped bring pollinator gardens to Irvington and also works closely with the Westchester Land Trust.

The bottom line is: People get it. People like beautiful flowers, butterflies and moths.

Ultimately, you can contextualize pollinator gardens into broader environmental awareness. Why leave leaves and mulch? Why no pesticides? Why food scraps? Pollinator Pathways is a door opener for people who are not yet involved in environmentally sensitive land care.

Sue purchased a Pollinator Pathway medallion for our small project.

Chet recommended "Native Plants for the Small Yard." You can download the book for free here!

Other resources Chet points us towards: Here is a link to the O'Hara Nature Center page on the www.irvingtonwoods.org web site.   https://www.theirvingtonwoods.org/ohara-nature-center/   On this page you will see a link to the Demonstration Gardens.   If you click through to a specific Garden, you will see a further link that says:  "For more information about _____ click here."   If you click that hyperlink, it will take you to detailed information about each of the individual plants in the garden, including how they should be maintained and what sun they need.

Plus, how to repel ticks from your garden without using pesticides, and how to find native plants for our region.
